The Design Process

I charge an hourly rate for design for print projects. On receiving a design brief, I provide a detailed quote, including the time-scale & optional printing costs. I provide design previews of the finished artwork, so my customers will see exactly what they are getting before making any payments.

Exhibitions & Large Format

I work with a number of clients that require regular exhibition stand display designs. I work closely with the stand producer to meet their specifications. Each new project will have different requirements, but I will provide high quality artwork that passes any pre-flight checks. Read more about Large Format Print Design.

Printing Solutions

I do not provide a printing service, but I regularly work with a number of trusted printing companies. Choosing the right printing company will depend on the type of document – whether it is a calendar, brochure, flyers or large format – I can identify the best quality, yet most cost-effective printing solution.

Industry Experience

Print production experience.

My first job was as a Pre-Press Operative, or Artworker, at the Evening Post in Swansea. This involved preparing various publications for print using graphics / desktop publishing software to compile newspapers and magazines. This position gave me a great knowledge of how graphics should be created for CMYK printing.

After five years working in newspaper production, I moved to Cardiff to work for a large label manufacturer who used flatbed and rotary printing equipment, which gave me the technical knowledge in graphics preparation for this printing process. I then moved to Gloucester to work for an extremely busy commercial printing company who used various digital and flatbed printing systems to produce material. This was a high paced job which required a high degree of print graphics software.

When I initially became a freelance designer, I took a part time job in Swansea at a large format printing specialist. This job gave me a first hand knowledge of how graphics needed to be generated for banners, posters and large format exhibitions. Using the correct colour profiles and resolution is essential, and seeing the results getting printed allowed me to fine-tune my print artworking techniques.

A large part of my freelance design work now involves print design, creating all kinds of designs for flyers, adverts, banners, brochures and posters. I also create print-ready artwork for numerous companies who require large format exhibition displays or large banners and posters. My experience in large format artworking allows me to supply high quality artwork, knowing it will be technically sound when printed.
