Measuring Results
Of course it is important to understand how PPC Ads are performing, if the money you are spending is generating sales or customer enquiries. And there are a few ways to effectively measure the success of a campaign.
Using Tracking Cookies
To accurately measure the success of a PPC campaign, I often use tracking cookies on the target website that tells us precisely how many clicks have been generated and how many clicks then turned into an actual sale or customer enquiry.
For the Privacy Conscious
I believe that it can be beneficial to avoid using tracking cookies, which are becoming less accepted in modern times. There are ways to measure the success of a PPC campaign without the use of tracking cookies, but you will get slightly less comprehensive statistics about the journey of your visitors.
My approach to PPC Advertising
To create a truly successful advertising campaign, it is essential to understand the products or services that a company is providing. For each new campaign that I create, I will research the company services and products, along with the main competitor advertising campaigns, in order to select the most effective keywords, headlines and advertising platforms.
My PPC services include…
- Identifying the most effective PPC platform
- Initial service / product keyword research
- Generating concise / engaging headlines & content
- Ongoing budget / keyword refinement
- In-depth monthly reporting
Requisites for PPC Advertising success
A successful PPC campaign is only the first part of the journey!
Of course, when a visitor clicks on an advert, it is then up to the targeted website to effectively illustrate what they are selling, and then direct the visitor to making an enquiry or actually buy your product.
Web Design & SEO improvements
For each of my customers, I also look at the targeted website and offer advice on content or SEO improvements, if I think it is required to encourage more sales or customer enquiries. In many cases I find that a highly successful PPC campaign can simply be a waste of money, if the targeted website is not intelligently designed.
Selecting the right PPC advertising strategy
There are a number of avenues and platforms that can display your PPC advertising campaign. Choosing the correct avenue can depend on your specific products or services.
General Search & Mobile Campaigns
By far the most popular avenue, PPC Search Campaigns display your advert on search engine results, on all devices – desktop or mobile. These campaigns can often be the most effective form of PPC advertising, but can be expensive depending on the strength of your competition.
Display Advertising Campaigns
Display Ads can be less expensive than standard Search Ads, and you can include images and company logos to generate more visual impact. Display Ads can be placed on many popular websites that incorporate Google AdSense, but Display Ads can be more or less effective depending on your products or services.
Shopping Ads Campaigns
Shopping Ads are most effective if you have a functional e-commerce website, where visitors can purchase your products immediately. Shopping Ads can be highly cost effective and successful, however, you need to have highly competitive prices or truly original products to succeed.
Remarketing PPC Campaigns
Similar to Display Ads, Remarketing Ads are custom graphical adverts that are displayed on popular websites that allow advertising. When a visitor has viewed your website, with the use of cookies, your advert can be displayed on any further websites they visit to remind them of your products or services.

PPC Experience
My History in PPC Advertising
If there is one area where experience really counts, it’s PPC advertising. Because if you get it wrong, you are pouring money down the drain! I’ve been very fortunate to have had the flexibility of large budget campaigns, and the freedom to experiment.
Go back five to ten years, before the rise of AI, PPC Ads were completely different. There were no real recommendations, no optimisation scores, just the basic statistics that told you the facts. And you were required to use your actual brain to determine how to generate a successful advert.
And believe it or not, the old ways still work!
Think about it. The Google recommendations are designed to make you spend more money. They are designed to widen the net as much as possible. They pretend that getting lots of clicks on your advert is what you want. But no.
What you really need to do is completely ignore the Google Recommendations. Completely ignore the “Google Ads Experts” that constantly phone you up. Only then do you have a chance of turning a profit. The real goal is not to get lots of traffic onto your website, the goal is to highly fine-tune the advert to get the CORRECT people to click on it.
Basic Common Sense
It’s the same with Facebook Ads and Bing Ads, you really need to dive deep into the settings to make them work. If you think you can just “auto-populate” your advert, choose an audience, then see what happens, this is going to splurge your money in minutes.
Most of the time it’s just basic common sense. If you get the idea that Google, Facebook or Bing can not be trusted, and you need to make your own judgements on how to set up your advert, you should be fine. But if you fall into the trap of listening to all of the recommendations, it’s like going to a blood bank and having Dracula there, advising you to donate 74 pints of blood. You don’t have to listen!
Measuring results
In the old days we created separate landing pages for different campaigns, such as a specific print advert. This meant that whatever reaction you got, you knew precisely where it came from.
Analytics is optional
Google will constantly tell you that you simply must set up conversion tracking! But why? Yes, you get unlimited data about your customers journey. But at the end of the day, they either became a customer or not. If you KNOW that you have set up a website and PPC Ads campaign effectively, you do not need to track the results, you can simply wait for them to flood in.
