My SEO Experience
I have been building and managing all kinds of commercial websites since 2010, but built my first personal website in the year 2000, before Google even existed! When the main search engines were Yahoo or Ask Jeeves. Even before my professional web design career, I had an understanding of the basic building blocks of the internet, and this can remain important to this day.
Understanding the underlying goal of the search engine algorithms is important when making any SEO changes, in order to avoid any basic errors. If you follow the general rules, you never need to worry about SEO algorithm updates.
My Approach to SEO
Choosing Keywords
SEO is firstly about the words you write, conveying your products or services in the most descriptive yet concise way possible. My first job is to truly understand the best selling points for each service or product, and which keywords or phrases should be targeted.
Implement an SEO Plan
The strength of your competition can determine the amount of work involved. For most locally based companies, a fairly small, yet well built website can often achieve high rankings. But for companies with strong competition, or a national audience, a broader SEO approach is required.
Monitor the SEO progress
In most cases, major SEO updates will take between 4 to 8 weeks to take effect on search engine listings. To get a true reflection of the success of SEO changes you need to take snapshots at 3 or even 6 month intervals.
Refine SEO structure
In the rare cases where my SEO updates have not achieved top rankings, I then review the competition that are above my clients, and examine how they are gaining better results. In some cases I then simply refine and build more content.
Of course I can’t reveal precisely what I actually do to improve my clients’ SEO, but it’s no secret! Simply adding more topical content to a website is the number one way to improve your search engine rankings.
Content is Everything!
Traditional marketing and advertising techniques are still alive and well, they are still hugely important to the success of a business. At the top level, where every company has good SEO, the difference between converting visitors into customers is the way you structure the text on your website.
AI Tools and SEO
With the advances in AI technology, I have seen an explosion in content being generated for numerous websites. But you need to understand that AI content is not truly original. Perhaps 20% of AI content will be incorrect and occasionally downright idiotic. Companies that invest time into truly original content will always reap the benefits.

SEO Experience
My History in Web Design & SEO
Back in the year 2000 I was introduced to web design at college, we were shown how you can use a simple text editor like Notepad to create a website. Google wasn’t even invented yet! But we had search engines like Yahoo and Ask Jeeves, so we were taught how to get a website listed on a search engine.
My early days of employment were in various print production roles, but I always experimented by building personal websites. In 2008 I was lucky to get an amazing job with Remind4u, who later became Funky Pigeon, an e-commerce greeting card company with international reach. This job gave me a great insight into running an e-commerce website and the techniques they used to acquire customers, how to structure the website for good SEO.
Introduction to Professional Web Design
The main web developer at Funky Pigeon was a proper coding guru from Chicago, who was always helpful to me and gave me so much advice on building websites. My job was to create the front-end graphics & HTML for the website, but my HTML had to fit in to the space provided by the developer, so they always gave me important advice on the best ways to generate flexible HTML, and how to keep search engines happy!
Going Freelance
When I became a Freelance Designer, I was lucky to get a freelance role with Chromogenex, who later became Cosmeditech. For every one of their customers, they offered a free web design as part of their marketing support – and I was tasked to build these websites! So this meant I was creating up to six websites each month, and I still maintain many of these websites to this day. But it’s this volume of web design and longevity of website management that really allows you to fine tune your SEO knowledge.
The SEO Long Game
Search Engine Optimisation can be very frustrating because it often takes three to eight weeks for a search engine to reflect your SEO updates in their search rankings. You have to be extremely patient and have an almost photographic memory, have confidence in the SEO changes you are making, and implement them systematically.
And this is why experience matters.
Search Engine Algorithms are being tweaked all of the time, in the pursuit of making it fair for everyone. A search engine simply wants to present the most accurate and qualified information to the end user, and many SEO techniques have actually become a hinderance. After managing a large number of websites over many years, you get a good grasp of what SEO techniques really work.
The influx of AI tools and SEO
In the last few years there has been an explosion in content creation, utilising AI tools like ChatGTP. And of course I have experimented with it! But you really need to understand how these systems create their content – before you copy & paste this information onto your website.
We know that what a search engine really values is original content, that is accurate and qualified. But 100% of the information AI will give you is simply regurgitated content, skimmed from whatever source the AI system was trained on. And 20% of the information that AI gives you is quite frankly idiotic.
Originality will prevail!
If you’ve read this far, then perhaps my hand-written text is actually a testament to original copywriting! And I truly believe that this is one of the most effective ways of improving your SEO.
